FORMULA STUDENT

"There are two really innovative forms of motorsport left. One of them is Formula 1 and the other one is Formula Student".  - Ross Brawn.

After noticing that young people who came out of engineering schools had great theoretical knowledge but did not have those skills that cemented the professionals, in the eighties it arised a new scenario. The United States was the forefather that allowed students to implement the knowledge learned in the classroom in a practical way. Thereby, students could enhance their professional skills and experience while dealing with enterprises, searching for funding, working under pressure and creating an industrial design.

Since it resulted in a good way to motivate young people, in 1981 United States gave birth to the Formula SAE, the first student car which bore resemblance to a formula car.

In 1988 this competition expanded to England, where the first competition of Formula Student took place. Since then, the Formula Student has grown to have more than 400 teams in the entire world and 16 countries hosting competitions.

All in all, this competition has established itself as the biggest showcase of future engineers of competition in the world.

 FORMULA STUDENT TESTS

The objective of the Formula Student is the development of the students, beyond the racing. In every competition there are two competition categories: the statics and dynamics events.

In the static events the team must defend the design of the single-seater in front of  experienced judges  of the motorsport, whereas in the dynamic events, the car must perform dinamically and complete different tracks so that the car's performance can be evaluated.

STATICS EVENTS

Business Plan (75 points)

Presentation of a fictional creation of a company in front of the judges who play the role of potential investors.

Cost Event  (100 points)

Detailed presentation of the costs of fabrication and set-up of the single-seater according to a standardized price tables.

Design Event (150 points)

Presentation of the objectives of the design of the single-seater and the engineering behind its design.

DYNAMICS TESTS

Skid Pad (75 points)

"8" track where it is proven the resistance of the car to the lateral forces.

Acceleration (100 points)

75m  straight track that measures the acceleration of the car.

Autocross (125 points)

1km track (1 lap) which rules the starting position in the Endurance

Endurance (275 points)

The key competition. 22km around the Autocross' circuit. In this event, fatigue resistance emerges as a key factor.  It includes a driver's change

Efficiency (100 points)

Classification in accordance to the amount of energy consumed during the Endurance.
